How do Developers Want to be Contacted?

Created: Sep 01, 2015 04:31PM PDT      Updated: Apr 21, 2016 11:00AM PDT
"Why doesn't TalentBin have more phone numbers?"

We are asked this question often here at TalentBin, and while we are always adding more phone numbers for the recruiters who prefer that option, our contact information efforts have historically been focused elsewhere. And, I must say, for great reason.

This year's
StackOverflow's Developer Hiring Landscape survey collected responses from over 26,000 developers in 157 countries. And while the entire survey is worth a read for any tech recruiter, there was one poll in particular that stood out. After polling this expansive group of developers and asking them how they want to be contacted by recruiters, it's crystal clear what their preference is....Emails!

In fact, 65% of respondents in the survey said email is a "great" way to hear about new opportunities.

Fortunately, these findings perfectly align with our contact information compiling efforts here at TalentBin. We've concentrated heavily at gathering and locating hard-to-find email addresses, because we've noticed it's consistently the most successful way to connect with developers.

And now, with all of our efforts around collecting email addresses, TalentBin has over 11 million email addresses currently in the database!

However, the benefit of having the email address only goes so far, it's up to you to act and start the conversation! With TalentBin's email integration features, it's easier than ever to properly reach out to a promising candidate.

Let's quickly cover or recap the features that make emailing through TalentBin successful.

Why Not Inmail?

Using LinkedIn Inmail to contact candidates is a great tool for many professions, but software developers and other tech professionals aren't hanging out on LinkedIn because their inboxes are so saturated with messages. The figure above shows the InMail is third on the list of how developers like to be contacted, and as recruiters working against the clock to fill these positions, we want to hit these developers where they're going to immediately see our messages.

However, the benefit of having the email address only goes so far, it's up to you to act and start the conversation! With TalentBin's email integration features, it's easier than ever to properly reach out to a promising candidate.

Let's quickly cover or recap the features that make emailing through TalentBin successful.

Email Features in TalentBin

  • Email Integration: By connecting your email account to TalentBin (or using Mailbox Lite), you are able to send and receive messages directly from the tool. Also, by integrating, you gain access to a number of great integration features:
    • Automated Follow-up and Drip Marketing CampaignsArguably the most effective feature in TalentBin, our campaigns will handle the entire follow-up process for you. Send the initial email, add someone to a campaign, and let the tool do the rest!
    • Open and Click Tracking: You can see when a candidate opens or clicks a link in your email. This feature significantly helps our users gauge a candidate's interest level in an opportunity.
    • Auto-StagingKeeping an organized pipeline is incredibly important, and auto-staging significantly helps with this process. When you send a message or the candidate replies, the tool will automatically mark them as "Attempting to Contact" or "In Discussion.
    • Dynamic Personalization: The best way to get the responses you want from candidates is to personalize your messages to each candidate. They want to know that you've done your research and believe that they are a fit for this particular role. With TalentBin, you can automatically insert the top web profiles, professional skills and personal interests of a candidate to make this process efficient and painless.

  • Email ConciergeWhile we've focused heavily on compiling email addresses, we are not perfect, and from time to time you will run into a candidate without a public email address. This is where email concierge comes into the picture. If a candidate doesn't have an email address currently, you will see an option for "Request Contact Info". After selecting this option, our email concierge team will scour the internet and attempt to locate a working email address for you.

An entire team devoted to finding email addresses? Clearly, we place a high level of importance on finding you emails!

While I highly recommend using email as the primary contact method in TalentBin for all the reasons above, I don't want to completely discourage you from using other contact vectors.

There are times where cold calling a candidate is effective, maybe a Tweet can provide you with better visibility, sometimes a targeted InMail can be stronger opening, and so on. However, by using a "non-email" contact method, not only are you forgoing all of the features of email integration, you are also ignoring the preferences of your target audience!
