At TalentBin, our goal is not only to help recruiters find top candidates, but also to make it faster and easier to write personalized emails to them that leverage the wealth of data that exists on the open web.

The more specific and personalized you can get - The better response rate you'll receive!

While you may be familiar with some of the main sites developers are active on, such as Github and Stack Overflow, you may not be aware of the other 45+ websites that TalentBin crawls. Top recruiters use the skill data available on all these websites to drive up their response rates.

For example, if I find a Ruby candidate that has a LinkedIn profile, GitHub activity, and activity on RubyGems, I would want reference the RubyGems activity first and foremost, because that is the most specific website relevant to Ruby.

Not sure how to reference activity on
sites like RubyGems, CodeReview, or Programmers? Don't worry! Just search the list below for the role you're recruiting for, and we'll guide you on what websites to filter by, and show examples of outreach using that skill data!

Keep in mind that many websites, like Github, Stack Overflow, and BitBucket, can be used for any type of open-source developer skill set, so are relevant for almost the positions listed below. Click on the role you're recruiting for below, and happy purple squirrel hunting!
Note: If you don’t see the skill set you’re looking for on here, don’t worry, we’re adding new websites all the time, and feel free to email support@talentbin.com with any new websites you’d like added to the list.

Software Developers (Generic Best Practices)

(Java, Front-End, Back-End, .NET, C#, C++, Android, Big Data, Data Architect, Mobile, iOS, PHP, DevOps, etc.)

For any type of open-source software developer position (front-end, back-end, Java developers, .Net, etc), we recommend filtering your search results by GitHub and StackOverflow. This will help narrow your search results down to a manageable candidate pool, and you will see specific professional activity to reference in your emails.

GitHub and StackOverflow are the two most popular websites when it comes to coding activity, so it’s safe to say that if you are searching for any type of open-source software position and filter by these networks, your search results will be rich with useful data to reference in your outreach.

GitHub

GitHub is a web-based Git repository hosting service, and the most popular repository hosting service. GitHub allows users to create projects (repositories) in a specific language, or skill. A user might create or “own” a repository in Java, and other users can “contribute” to that repository by adding in code.

For the recruiter, this means that GitHub is a great place for finding qualified candidates: you can see the scripting languages a user is most well-versed in, take a look at specific projects (repositories) from a candidate, and use those as a reference point in your candidate outreach.

Expert Tips

  1. Pay attention to contributions on a user’s profile - this will tell you how active she or he is. All of the colored squares in the contribution section represent which days a user was active on the website.
  1. A user either owns or contributes to repositories, which are essentially web projects in a certain scripting language. Pay attention to the stars next to a person’s projects - if many other users have “starred” this repository, that means a lot of people find it useful and are intrigued by it. If a TalentBin profile mentions that a person is “interested” in a particular repository, this means they are “watching” it on Github.

Example Subject Lines

  • Hey {!CANDIDATE_FNAME}! Nice [skill] repos on Github!
  • Hey {!CANDIDATE_FNAME}! [#] Stars on your [skill] repos on Github? Nice work!

Example Template

Hey {!CANDIDATE_FNAME},

Hope you are having a good week! I was just on Github and came across your [Title] repository. [#] Stars?! You must know your stuff, nice work!

I’m reaching out because my company {!COMPANY_NAME} is hiring for a killer [Job Title], and based on your background in [skill], I think you’d be interested in learning more about the opportunity.

StackOverflow

StackOverflow is a question and answer site for professional and enthusiast programmers. Members ask and answer questions & gain reputation based on the community’s response (through voting) to their questions and answers. StackOverflow belongs to the over-arching StackExchange family - these websites are all designed in the same way (questions and answers), but are separated by subject or skill set.

Users answer and ask questions related to specific coding languages, and receive badges for hitting milestones on the site and providing good content/insight. Their profiles show how many people they have reached through their answers, and the top users are ranked (e.g. Top 2% of users).

For the recruiter, this means that StackOverflow is a great place for understanding a user’s expertise in a particular skill set or programming language, and also is a great source of data to reference in candidate outreach!

Expert Tips

  1. As far as rankings are concerned, the smaller the number the better - e.g. if someone is in the top 96% on Stack, they are actually in the bottom 4%
  2. Pay attention to tags - this will tell you the languages and skill sets the candidate uses most
  3. Pay attention to a person’s bio as well - you can find good personal information in there. This will often be highlighted in the person’s TalentBin profile!

Example Subject Lines

  • Hey {!CANDIDATE_FNAME}! Nice [skill] answers on Stack - you know your stuff!
  • Hey Lisa! Nice C# answers on Stack - you know your stuff!
  • Hey {!CANDIDATE_FNAME}! Top 2% of Stack?! Impressive!
  • Hey James! Java & Scala, Stargazing & Cycling? Busy guy!

Example Template

Hey {!CANDIDATE_FNAME},

Hope you are having a good week! I was just on StackOverflow and came across your profile, and was impressed by your [skill] expertise. Top [#]% of users? You must know your stuff, nice work!

When you filter by StackOverflow and Github, you will still see rich profiles with many other social networks and sources of information about a candidate. Below are some examples of other web sources you will see on a candidate’s TalentBin profile, and how to reference each.

BitBucket

BitBucket is a web-based hosting service for projects. It’s very similar to Github, but has about half of the users on the site. This is still a very great source of information about a candidate; you can tell what scripts they are the most proficient in, and reference specific candidate work, much like Github.

Expert Tips

  1. On Github you see repositories that users own and contribute to, on BitBucket you will see projects.
  2. Check on the dates of projects - if a candidate only has projects on the site from 2009, they are probably not worth mentioning.

Example Subject Lines

  • Hey {!CANDIDATE_FNAME}! Nice [skill] repository on BitBucket!

Example Template

Hey {!CANDIDATE_FNAME},

How’s it going? I was just on BitBucket and came across your profile, and found your [project title] project! I’m really impressed, you seem to be quite the expert in [skill].

MeetUp

MeetUp is a network of local groups and events. Users can organize or find local groups about common interests. This is a great way to gather both professional and personal information about a candidate. For the recruiter, this is a great source to find both professional and personal interests about a candidate.

For example, if someone belongs to a Ruby MeetUp group, we can infer that they are interested in/familiar with Ruby. Alternatively, if they are in a Rock Climbing MeetUp group, you can reference that in your subject line and make them more likely to open and respond to your email.

Expert Tips

  1. Make sure to take a look at a person’s bio & interests along with the groups they belong to - this can also give you valuable information about a candidate.

Example Subject Lines

  • Hey {!CANDIDATE_FNAME}! [Skill] & [Personal Interest]? Cool Combo!
  • Hey {!CANDIDATE_FNAME}! Java & Cricket? Cool Combo!

For Ruby and Ruby on Rails developers, RubyGems is the best network to filter by.* RubyGems is a site and downloadable software that allows users to easily download, install and use Ruby software packages. The package is called a “gem” and contains a package Ruby application or library.

When someone creates a gem, other users can go on and download it. So if a user has a lot of gems on their profile, and his or her gems have a lot of downloads, it’s safe to assume they are a skilled ruby developer.

Note: You can also find Ruby Developers on the websites under

QA Engineers

For Quality Assurance positions, we recommend filtering your search by QA.* This is another one of those websites that is in the StackExchange family, and is set up in the same way as StackOverflow: Users answer and ask questions specific to quality assurance, and receive badges for hitting milestones on the site and providing good content/insight. Their profiles show how many people they have reached through their answers, and the top users are ranked (e.g. Top 2% of users).

Note: You can also find QA Engineers on the websites under General Software Developer
